A MALTON playgroup is aiming to put together a book of memories and memorabilia to mark its 50th birthday.

The Firestation playgroup, based off Castlegate, was set up in 1963, but the golden anniversary was only brought to light by a former member of staff this year.

Playgroup leader Jo Ogram said although they had missed the actual anniversary they still hoped to celebrate the playgroup's 50th birthday.

"We are aiming to put a book together with memories from previous staff, children and committee members over the last 50 years," she added.

"I have been told that the playgroup was set up by a group of doctors' wives and has remained at the same site but other that that there isn't much known about the history."

Jo said the playgroup had developed over the years from a mums and toddler group and was now Ofsted registered with fully-qualified staff.

"At the moment we have over 70 children aged two to five from Malton, Norton and the surrounding area," she added.

"Once we have put the book together we will look at holding an open day and invite people to come along and have a look at the playgroup and what we do."

Anyone who has memories or photos of the Firestation playgroup should email 585605@nyey.co.uk or phone 01653 694768.

The playgroup is also asking for a £5 donation towards the production of the book.
