Police have cordoned off the area around a popular Whitby attraction where a woman was found with life threatening head injuries following a fall this morning.

The female, in her 50s, was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough where her injuries are being treated as unexplained, after she was found on Henrietta Street, near the 199 steps at 6.45am.

She was transferred from the scene to Caedmon School in a North Yorkshire Ambulance Service vehicle.

The helicopter then transported her onwards to hospital from Whitby Abbey, where she arrived ten minutes later in a serious but stable condition.

Officers are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 - select option 1 - and pass information to the Force Control Room.
