AMATEUR bakers are being asked to rise to the occasion at the Grand Helmsley Cake Show.

The event is part of Helmsley’s Summer Celebration and will take place on Saturday, from 4pm, at Helmsley Walled Garden.

The classes are: Yorkshire parkin, Yorkshire tea loaf, chocolate cake, Victoria sponge, four cheese scones and decorated biscuits (under-16s class).

Entries will be judged by Helmsley bakers Rhian Crusher, from Celebration Cakes, and Sue, from Auntie Anne’s, which won the Yorkshire heat of TV show Britain’s Best Bakery.

Medals will be awarded for each class winner, with a trophy for the best in show.

The entry fee per cake per class is £1 and entrants need to bring their home-made goods to the garden from 3.30pm.

Proceeds will be split between Helmsley’s Christmas lights appeal and Helmsley Walled Garden, which is a registered charity.

Helmsley’s Summer Celebration runs on August 1 and 2 and includes activities and entertainment for all ages.

There will be street performances and entertainment, local food and drink tastings, an Art Trail, Welly Wanging, dog fancy dress, and a Yorkshire Icon Trail where visitors have to spot the faces of their favourite ‘born and bred’ Yorkshire men and woman for the chance to win a prize.

A Wedding Dress Festival, is also taking place in Helmsley’s All Saints Church from Saturday, August 2 to Sunday, August 10, displaying dresses, photos and wedding memorabilia from across the decades.

Tricia Harris, from Helmsley Walled Garden, said: “We want this to be fun, and for as many people as possible to join in.

“We know there’s loads of keen bakers out there, and shows like the Great British Bake-Off have really helped to encourage more people to give baking a try.

“We also hope there will be a lot of youngsters getting creative making and decorating biscuits and we can’t wait to see – and taste – the end results.”
