COUNCILLORS are spending £272 on a new litter bin in Kirkbymoorside’s Market Place alongside the Memorial Hall benches.

Meanwhile, parish councillors in the Hackness and Harwood Dale group, determined to keep their villages litter free, have adopted a DIY scheme.

The area, which includes Langdale End, Silpho, Wrench Green and Broxa, as well as Hackness and Harwood Dale, is popular with tourists because of its close proximity to the North York Moors National Park and Wykeham Forest. But, said chairman, Councillor Tony Lockey, the visitors do leave litter behind and the parish council asked Councillor Derek Bastiman, the borough council member for the area, to help by organising litter picker-tools.

“There’s a splendid community spirit in the villages and people are willing to help keep the verges and roadsides litter free to keep them looking spic-and-span,” said Coun Bastiman.
