OH my cod! Diners traditionally have a choice of fish and chips or pie and chips. But now a North Yorkshire bakery has created a combination of the two - with the first ever fish and chip pie.
The Yorkshire Baker's pie, which has gone on sale at Marks & Spencer stores across the country, has no traditional pastry lid.
Instead, the pie is covered with handmade chips, which are made at the bakery and cut to a certain measurement.
However, there is still a crisp short crust butter pastry base.
A Marks & Spencer spokeswoman said The Yorkshire Baker, which is based at Malton, had been a supplier for the retail giant for more than three years.
"The business has been built up from a ‘one-man-band,' under the owner, Gill Ridgard, to a staff of 130," she said.
"The team moved into new, larger purpose built premises in 2013, which have been built to meet M&S’ demand for the products, creating investment and job opportunities in the local area.
"M&S currently sells over 26 Yorkshire Baker products – this also includes quiches, sausage rolls and pies."
She said the fish and chip pie had taken six months from initial research to production.
"It went into M&S stores last week and has been a big hit with customers, and the quantity made for the initial launch of the pie has quadrupled due to increased demand," she said.
"Each pie is handmade from the finest quality ingredients sourced from local suppliers. These are inspected and processed in-house to ensure ingredients are of the best quality."
