HUNDREDS of runners took part in the annual Helmsley 10k at the weekend.

Held on Easter Sunday, about 400 competitors took part in the fifth annual event, which raises money towards the refurbishment of Helmsley Sports and Social Club.

Carol Swift, one of the organisers, said it has been a fabulous day.

“We had fine weather and everyone was very complimentary and commented on what a great event it was,” she said.

“Runners came from all over the country and we had a lot of new competitors as well as many regulars, who come along every year.”

This year’s event was sponsored by BHE agricultural contractors, based in Sproxton, with owner Simon Dunn starting the race.

Carol said: “We would like to thank them for their support and thanks to everyone else involved in organising the race. Everyone enjoyed it and all the runners got an Easter egg.”

As well as the 10k, there was a children’s race.

Carol said: “It was great to see so many youngsters taking part because we need to encourage children to join in and they all got a small egg as well.

“We don’t know how much we have raised, but hope it will be at least £2,000.

“The fundraising is partly what the 10k is about, but its main aim is for people to enjoy themselves.”
