THREE dentists are swapping their dental tools and gloves for helmets and road bikes as they take part in a nine day cycle for charity.

Covering a gruelling 874 miles, Dr Sarah Glover and practice manager Lawrence Herbert of Birdgate Dental, Pickering and Richard Marsden, of The Red House Dental Practice, Malton, are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Currently in training for their ride from John O'Groats to Land's End, the three dentists will be part of a team of 30, supported by Denplan, who will take part in the challenge.

With their training now well underway the team anticipate that the hardest part of the cycle will be battling the elements along the way.

Lawrence said: "The hardest part of preparing for the ride has been the winter weather. Cycling on our lightweight bikes in 40mph gusts hasn't been much fun. We all know that the challenge won't be easy but we've had such great support from our colleagues and patients that we know we'll get through it somehow."

"Sarah and I have both had family members who have been affected by cancer and believe that Macmillan is a brilliant charity that provides vital medical, emotional, practical and financial support to families that really makes a difference. "

Together the entire team are hoping to raise £30,000 and the three Ryedale dentists are putting their previous fundraising knowledge to the test to ensure they raise as much as possible.

Richard said: "This ride is definitely going to be tough. Our dental practice has taken part in many activities to raise money for charities before, but this really does seem like the ultimate challenge.

The team will leave on Saturday, May 10. To sponsor them visit www.justgiving.com/company/Denplan
