RYEDALE District Council's deputy chairman, Ann Hopkinson has resigned.

Councillor Ann Hopkinson said that she was disappointed to be stepping down from the role she has held for about 11 months. Coun Hopkinson, a member of the Conservative Party, was expected to be elected as chairman in May at the council’s annual meeting.

She said: "I decided that I would not be able to continue or take on the chairmanship on in May owing to extra work and really it was just the time factor.

"I felt that I would not be able to give it the time that it required."

Coun Hopkinson also works at the Steam and Moorland Garden Centre, Pickering and said that with her work there she would not be able to dedicate sufficient time to the role at the council.

She said "I will be sad but it is no good taking something on if you can't give the time to it."
