KIRKBYMOORSIDE has ambitious plans to again make the market town a blooming lovely town.

Its “In Bloom” group is seeking sponsorship for floral display tubs and chairman, Gaynor De Barr, said the aim is to mark the centenary of the First World War and the 50th anniversary of Yorkshire in Bloom.

“The In Bloom group hopes to make Kirkbymoorside’s war memorial and war graves part of the commemoration,” she said, while Yorkshire in Bloom’s milestone is set to be depicted with a theme of “going for gold”.

Last year, the group received a top accolade in the Yorkshire in Bloom annual competition – a silver gilt award. There was also a special commendation, with their work in the community being praised by the judges for its high standard for such a small group of volunteers, said Mrs de Barr.

In addition, there will be hanging basket displays, and one of the highlights of the group’s activities will be a an Open Gardens Day on Sunday, July 27. “We will also be running our usual cake stalls and coffee mornings, and helping with the 10k run,” she added.

Another successful fundraising event has been the publication of a cookery book. “It was a first rate success,” added Mrs De Barr.

Now, businesses, organisations and individuals are being urged to help the In Bloom by sponsoring a flower tub for £40. Further details are available from Richard Coates, the treasurer, at 11 Castlegate, Kirkbymoorside.
