New vicar arrives on the Street A SWAZILAND-born vicar has been appointed as the new vicar for six parishes around Malton.

The Reverend Martin Allwood will be the vicar of the Street parishes of Amotherby, Appleton-le-Street, Barton-le-Street, Coneysthorpe, Hovingham, Scackleton and Slingsby from tomorrow (Thursday).

He will be instituted by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, today (Wednesday) at All Saints’ Church, Hovingham.

Martin, who was born in Swaziland, moved to the UK in 2001 after living in South Africa where he studied for a degree in agricultural horticulture.

“I enjoyed working in agriculture but felt that God was calling me to do something more,” he said.

“I bring a wealth of experience from life across two continents, much of which has been gained in rural areas.

“I have been drawn to the beauty that is Yorkshire, particularly in its similarity to some of the South African countryside I grew up in - although there’s more rain here.”

Martin takes over from the Reverend Beryl Bowes, who retired in 2012. There will be a special service to welcome him tomorrow (Thursday) in All Saints Church, Hovingham, at 7.30pm.
