Volunteer honoured by Ryedale Lions Club
12:32pm Wednesday 8th January 2014 in News
A VOLUNTARY worker has been honoured by the Ryedale Lions Club for her tireless commitment to the local community.
Daphne Bowes, of Middleton Road, Pickering, received the Lions Club’s annual Certificate of Appreciation from the club’s president, Vic Hall.
Mr Hall said: “The list of Daphne’s many contributions to the people of Pickering is quite amazing.
“Without the often unseen and unrewarded efforts of people like her, many community services simply would not be able to run.” Among her commitments, Daphne organises the Tuesday Luncheon Club at the WRVS Centre, provides temporary accommodation for homeless young people (SASH), acts as chairperson of the Pickering Events Group, and runs drop-in soup and coffee sessions at Potter Hill Chapel.
She also arranges theatre trips for senior citizens, sits on the organising committee for Pickering foodbank, which came into operation in November, and is committed to Fairtrade in Pickering.
Last year, she played a leading role in the organisation of the sleep-out in Pickering for SASH (Safe and Sound Homes).
Mrs Bowes said: “I really appreciate this award, but I accept it on behalf of all the team that works with me.”
