James Herriot book wings its way to Russia

A RUSSIAN mother needed help from staff at a North Yorkshire tourist attraction to get the Russian book that her two-year-old son wanted for Christmas.

Tanya Shishlyannikova, from Voronezh Oblast, 600 km south of Moscow, could not find a Russian edition of All Creatures Great And Small by Thirsk vet James Herriot.

Her two-year-old son, Vyacheslav or Slava for short, is a keen James Herriot fan and she thought it would make the ideal Christmas present for him.

So she contacted the World of James Herriot in Thirsk, who were able to locate a copy.

The tourist attraction’s managing director Ian Ashton said: “We have now been able to forward the Russian-language version of the book in time for Christmas so that Slava’s mum can have it wrapped and read for the big day. Tanya confirmed its arrival and she is delighted.”

The request came shortly after another special Russian moment for the centre. A group from the High School of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St Petersburg, recently visited the centre.
