Rievaulx and Hawnby Parish Councils are working with the Environment Agency and North Yorkshire County Council to develop community emergency plans in the event of emergencies and flooding.

The area around Rievaulx and Hawnby has a history of flash flooding and the emergency plans will highlight measures that need to be taken to minimise the impact on people and property. It will identify local risks, warn and inform residents and identify local skills and resources available to help in an emergency.

Robin Derry, senior community engagement officer at the Environment Agency, said: “Communities need to prepare in advance and know what to do should flooding occur. Flash floods happen very quickly and there is often no time to issue a flood warning in advance. It is important for individuals to understand their risk and what action to take.”

The Environment Agency wants to work with other local communities which are at risk from flash flooding including Boltby, Helmsley and Levisham Station.
