HELMSLEY showcased its independent shops and businesses by taking part in the first dedicated day to small UK firms.

Small Business Saturday was championed across the country by Chuka Umunna, the Shadow Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills. The initiative has already won the support of the Prime Minister and the Business Secretary, Vince Cable.

The non-political campaign aimed to highlight small business success and encourage consumers to shop local and support small businesses in their communities.

Activities in Helmsley included a Christmas wishing tree, festive photo booth, craft demonstrations, competitions and a visit by Father Christmas.

Carolyn Frank, from Libby Butler Jewellers, which was one of the 100 UK firms featured in promotions ahead of the first dedicated day focused on small businesses, said: “Saturday was a wonderful day and I’d like to thank all the 40 businesses who were involved for their generous contributions before, during and after the event.

“It brought residents, visitors and businesses together and got us all in the mood for Christmas.

“We’ve had great feedback, and it made me realise once again how lucky we are.

“ We are an engaged community, in an historic town with thriving, vibrant independent shops, cafés, hotels and galleries – this is what many other towns wish for.

“So many people came along from all over Ryedale and further afield and enjoyed the magic of Helmsley. It’s given all involved a real buzz.

“Our tree festival continues until December 19, so I feel Small Business Saturday is just the start and hope that the support for independent businesses continues.”
