THOUSANDS of jobs are to be created with the introduction of a new potash mine in North Yorkshire, developers have said.
York Potash said it will create 1,000 jobs at the site near Whitby, with many more expected across supporting industries, manufacturers and delivery companies from across the North East.
The company met regional members of the Energy Industries Council at a recent event in York to provide an update on the project, and the development of an underground pipeline, processing and portside facilities in Teesside.
Sarah Lansdell, head of UK & National Events for council, said: “The fact that this will be the first potash mine built in the UK for 40 years makes this a very exciting project with both local and national significance, and we look forward to seeing this project come to fruition.”
Graham Clarke, operations director for Sirius Minerals, the parent company of York Potash, said: “The York Potash Project will provide a major stimulus for the regional economy by creating direct and indirect jobs across a range of industries. We remain committed to working with supply chain partners from across the region where practically possible.”
