HANDLEBAR moustaches will be on show as York cyclists embark on a charity fun ride in aid of Movember.

The six-mile cycle on Sunday, November 24, is run by Fulford Cycles and is being held for the second time after a successful event last year.

Meeting at the Minster at midday, the ride will take in some of the city’s scenic cycle paths before coming to an end at the Fulford Cycles shop on Main Street.

At the finish line there will be refreshments donated by customers and friends.

Last year’s inaugural ride attracted 75 participants, three times more than anticipated, and organisers are hoping for more this year.

Dean Shepperd, event co-organiser, said: “More people know about it this year, so in an ideal world we will get over 100 people.

“The police and highways authorities have given their blessing, so it’s all organised. Hopefully the river won’t be flooded, but even that couldn’t ruin the day.”

Men, women and children of all ages are welcome and are asked to get into the spirit of things by donning moustaches, be they grown, painted or stuck on.

Dean explained: “There is only one rule – that everybody has to have a moustache of some kind.”

More than £600 was raised last year, with prizes awarded to the best Mo Bro, Mo Sista and Mo Kid.

It was such a success that there are plans to make it a regular feature.

Dean said: “We’re going to make it an annual event, on the last Sunday in November, which will give the men time to fully grow their moustaches.”

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Movember has grown into one of the world’s most familiar fundraising stunts.

Fundraisers are encouraged not to shave for 30 days, and become “walking, talking billboards” for men’s health awareness.

In 2012, more than 1.1 million people took part in the movement, raising £92million.

Movember has been responsible for raising £272million worldwide since it was established in 2003.
