Survey to determine local housing needs in Ryedale
HOUSING needs surveys are being conducted in two Ryedale parishes to investigate if there is a need for affordable homes for local people.
Meeting the housing need is one of Ryedale District Council’s key aims and surveys being carried out in Sheriff Hutton and Scagglethorpe, will play a role in shaping housing provision in the areas.
Councillor Linda Cowling, leader of Ryedale District Council, said: “Ryedale District Council is committed to meeting the housing need of people living in the area.
“We are working hard to ensure that local people and their families can continue to live in Ryedale and need to identify areas where affordable houses could help this to happen.
“I urge people living in Sheriff Hutton and Scagglethorpe to take part in the surveys.”
Earlier this year, Derek Long, head of the Northern region of the National Housing Federation, highlighted concerns about the lack of affordable homes in rural areas in a report launched during Northern Rural Housing Week.
He said: ‘Rural communities in Ryedale are under threat due to a lack of affordable housing.
“Families who have lived in the countryside for generations are being priced out. They need new affordable housing or they will have no choice but to move away to urban areas.”
Mr Long added: “Hundreds of village shops, pubs and schools are closing year on year. Social housing is a key way to keep local families in villages and ensure rural communities stay alive.”
The council said it is vital that all people in housing need respond by completing the questionnaires.
Without this evidence of need, then affordable housing schemes which could help keep open vital community services such as shops and schools cannot be built.
People who have had to move away from their communities because of a lack of affordable homes, either to rent or to buy, can also take part in the survey as long as they have a strong connection to the parish in question.
If anyone in the parishes of Sheriff Hutton or Scagglethorpe are in housing need and want to remain in their communities, they need to contact Colin Huby, the Ryedale rural housing enabler at Ryedale District Council, Ryedale House, Malton, YO17 7ZH to obtain a questionnaire, alternatively phone 01653 600666 extension 354 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
