Malton School pupils organise events to help fund trip to Borneo
PUPILS from Malton School are organising fundraising events to help fund a trip of a lifetime to Borneo.
Abbey Smurthwaite, who lives in Norton, is holding a Borneo Ball at Malton and Norton Golf Club on Saturday, October 19.
Sponsored by Mike’s Carpets, the event will help Abbey towards the £4,000 she needs to raise to fund the trip next August with Camps International.
Abbey, a student at Malton School Sixth Form, said she would be spending a month in Borneo helping to improve the living standards of rural communities.
She said: “Myself and the other students will be involved in building community centres, planting trees and helping wildlife and also working directly with the community.
“It’s an amazing opportunity and I am very excited about it.”
The ball starts at 7pm and there will be music from the Nobody’s along with a raffle.
Tickets are £45 which includes a three-course meal and drinks on arrival.
For more information or to buy a ticket phone Abbey on 01653 695696.
Thomas Raistrick, 16, of Swinton is holding a talent show on Saturday at The Yard, Malton, alongside his two friends Emma and David who are also fundraising for the trip.
The charity cabaret event will be a chance for budding artists to show off their talents and Thomas is already looking ahead to how he can contribute to his fundraising target.
He said: “I work at the Blacksmiths Arms on a weekend so I have been putting the money I earn there towards it.
“Hopefully this event might give us the bit of a boost that we need because there’s vaccinations that we need to pay for as well.”
Richard Scarth, who has helped to organise the event and has been promoting it, said: “People at The Yard have been really, really helpful and it’s all going to charity. It should be a great event.”
Last year the school went to Kenya as part of the Camps International project and about 20 students will be heading to Borneo.
Thomas said: “I’m most looking forward to just going there and seeing the wildlife and making friends with all the people and the cultural aspect of it.” Tickets are £6 and for more information phone Richard on 07870 275891.
