Bridging the age gap in Terrington with ‘Tea and Talk’
CHILDREN at a Ryedale playgroup are putting on a show for local pensioners.
The youngsters, from Terrington pre-school playgroup, will stage a regular short performance at the village’s monthly ‘Tea and Talk’ meetings.
It follows an idea from new playgroup leader Helen Mulryne, who took over the role at the start of this term.
Having specialised in drama during her teacher training, she was keen to put her expertise to good use.
Helen, a mum of two, moved to Terrington two years ago, said the playgroup was a real lifeline enabling her to meet other young families in the community.
“When the post of playgroup leader came up, I leapt at the chance to apply and was thrilled to be offered the post,” she said.
“Pre-school education is all about providing a secure environment for children to freely explore and learn through play with the freedom to express themselves at the heart of it.
“One of the most important tools of pre-school education is the dressing-up box. It is amazing how effortless the learning is if you provide a few props, introduce some ideas and then allow the children’s imaginations to run free.”
Helen decided to introduce drama and role-play into the sessions as a way in which the children could explore the playgroup’s weekly themes and from here the idea of involving the wider community was born.
Jo Atkins, chairman of Terrington Playgroup, said they were delighted to welcome Helen as leader.
“Her skills will be invaluable in developing the children’s confidence,” she said.
“We were given a ‘good’ rating by Ofsted last term so we are really positive and excited about the future of the playgroup.”
Terrington Pre-School Playgroup meets in Terrington Village Hall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
There will be an open day on Wednesday, October 23 for parents and children aged two to school age. Funding is available for three and four-year-olds.
The pre-school is also holding a fundraising quiz night on Friday, October 25, at Terrington Village Hall from 7.30pm with fully licensed bar.
