Shop owner in bid to boost business in Malton
A LOCAL clothes store owner is calling for more businesses to set up shop in Malton.
Jane Scholefield, who runs Scholefield’s of Malton clothing store in the market square, believes other businesses should set up in the town and help attract more visitors.
Jane said: “We can’t compete with the high street but we are more individual and you get a personal service from us, we are a friendly lot.
“I don’t see other shops as competition. The more there are in Malton, the better it is for the town.”
The 42-year-old mother-of-two made the move from hospitality to clothing just under a year ago.
Alongside her husband, Jane used to run Will’s Bar in Malton and The Blacksmiths Arms, Westow, before deciding to make the move to retail due to wanting a job with more sociable hours. Formerly Clarks of Malton, Jane took over the business from Jane and Roger Bradley who had been running the shop for more than 20 years.
Jane now employs three part-time staff and has already begun expanding the business.
She said: “We have done a major refurbishment on the shop and I kept some of the same lines but added some new ones as well.
“I wanted to sell quality and I have added a new accessories line and we now cater for back to school as well so it is quite a diverse range we offer.”
Julian Rudd, head of economy and infrastructure at Ryedale District Council, said: “A wide range of shops in our market towns will encourage local people to meet their shopping needs in Ryedale and mean that we can attract more visitors.
“There have been gaps identified in terms of what is available, so a broadening of the offer can be very helpful.”
