THE village of Hovingham has raised more than £8,000 a year for a host of organisations and causes through its monthly market and community cafe.
A report by the Hovingham Action Group said that since it was set up, a team of 100 volunteers has worked to support the residents, with the market attracting 750 visitors a month.
“The community cafe and stalls raise more than £8,000 a year and generate valuable interest and support for their activities,” says the report.
Among the organisations to have benefited are the local cricket, tennis and bowls clubs, All Saints’ Church, the Methodist Church, National Trust, RNLI, Scackleton Action Group, Swinton Band, Hovingham School, York Hospital, a bee hive project and Hovingham Playground.
In addition, the action group has pioneered a list of other initiatives in Hovingham - snow clearing, bulb planting, pavement and verge maintenance, exercise group, craft show, wildflower areas and maintenance of the village green railings.
