Redundancies as newsagent in Howe Road, Norton closes
1:48pm Wednesday 18th September 2013 in News
A POPULAR newsagent in Norton has closed suddenly.
The shop, in Howe Road, which was owned by Newsplus, shut its doors last Tuesday. Five staff have been made redunadant.
Manager Dave Leppington, who has run the store for 21 years, said he had only been phoned that morning by the company managing director to say the newsagents was closing.
He said: “It will be a real blow for some of the people living nearby, particularly the older ones as it is often their only point of contact with other people during the day. I could have retired last year so for me it is not such a problem but for the other staff who were finished immediately it is a real blow.”
Dave said he had been contacted by two or three people who were interested in looking at the business, while home deliveries have been taken on by Castle News in Malton.
“The problem is, the longer it is closed, the harder it is to get customers back,” he said.
“It will be missed though and I hope something is done very quickly as it is a popular little shop and over the years customers have become friends as well.”
Steve Carroll, finance officer for Newsplus, said they were disappointed that they had been forced to close the shop.
“We are facing tough trading conditions and had no option but to shut the newsagents, but it is a real shame as it was such a popular store,” he said.
The store is now in the hands of administrators.
Mr Carroll said: “Unfortunately, we have had to make five people redundant, including Dave who has become part of the local community.”
