Officers' ‘sleepless nights’ over Northallerton Prison closure
9:51am Friday 6th September 2013 in News
PRISON officers have had sleepless nights and inmates are reportedly “unsettled” by the shock announcement that Northallerton Prison is to close.
Staff gathered outside the oldest prison in the country to hold a union branch meeting yesterday after learning the jail would shut, shedding about 190 jobs.
There were reports of “minor disturbances” inside the prison overnight after the news broke.
The Government announced on Wednesday that Northallerton was among four jails which would close by March and be replaced with a “super-prison” in north Wales. Terry Fullerton, the Prison Officers’ Association’s North East and Yorkshire spokesman, said: “This decision makes no sense as Northallerton is not in disrepair and is a highperforming centre.”
