Modern home plan rejected by council

A COUPLE who wanted to build a striking modern home in a village have had their plans turned down by Ryedale District Council.
Planning permission for the three-bedroom home in Thornton-le-Clay – which would have been built from brick and zinc with a flat roof and asymmetrical windows – was refused by the council’s planning committee for being too out of keeping with the rest of the village.
The agent for the scheme said the plan was for a modern energy efficient house that would meet all the owners’ needs, and added that they had tried to listen to their neighbours concerns by reducing the plans from three storeys to two and removing some windows.
But councillors objected to the building’s appearance.
Coun Lindsay Burr said that while she had supported similar buildings in Malton she could not get behind the plans in a traditional village street scene.
