Post offices ‘being closed by stealth’
8:58am Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in News
CAMPAIGNERS have claimed many local post offices are being permanently closed “by stealth”, with 15 North Yorkshire branches having been shut for more than a year as supposedly temporary measures.
The post office in Coxwold has not reopened since February 2008, leaving residents three miles away from their nearest branch, with others in Great Habton, Draughton, Danby, Staveley and Cowling all being closed for more than five years. The post offices in Bright Street, in the Leeman Road area of York, and at Stockton-on-the-Forest have also not operated for at least a year.
The Post Office said branches which closed in circumstances beyond its control were classed as being temporarily closed because of the possibility they could be reopened.
