Award for new-look farm buildings

REDUNDANT farm buildings in Kirkbymoorside which have been given a new lease of life as a gymnasium and swimming pool have won a major award.
The Local Authority Building Excellence Awards have given the honour of best domestic extension and alteration award to the building – a former cart shed and granary- at West Ings in the town.
The year-long project involved conversion and extension of the buildings to provide private leisure facilities and additional domestic accommodation, said Les Chapman, head of North Yorkshire Building Control.
“A huge amount of thought and time went into the design to ensure it was correct for the buildings, and for the adjacent and now linked-up farmhouse,” he added.
The environmentally-friendly scheme includes a ground source heat pump for both the pool and the entire property, and the owners, Will and Carole Shaw, made extensive use of reclaimed salvage materials from the site, said Mr Chapman.
“Attention to detail on any scheme such as this, is key, where new construction has been involved the conversion work matches well and complements the existing buildings.”
