Two arrested over fuel theft in Malton
12:24pm Wednesday 21st August 2013 in News
POLICE have arrested two men over the theft of diesel worth almost £700 from council vehicles in Malton.
The two men, a 30-year-old from Middlesbrough and a 25-year-old from Redcar, were spotted when police examined CCTV of the depot and surrounding area, and tracked them to their homes. They have now been released on bail.
Fuel was siphoned from four vans at Ryedale District Council’s depot on Showfield Lane between 4.30pm on Friday, August 2 and 5.30am on Monday, August 5.
Police believe the thieves scaled a six-foot fence and forced open the fuel tanks before climbing back over the fence.
Inspector Andy Everitt from Ryedale police said: “There has been some outstanding police work to trace and arrest the suspects in connection with the investigation.
“We are working closely with colleagues at Cleveland Police as well as with Ryedale District Council who have since reviewed security arrangements at the depot.”
He added: “This incident highlights the sheer determination of North Yorkshire Police and our partners to hit back at suspected criminals who think they can prey on our rural communities.”
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation can phone 101, select option 2, and ask for Andrew Pomfret, or email email@example.com
