Crash biker has narrow escape
12:16pm Wednesday 21st August 2013 in News
A MOTORCYCLIST had a lucky escape after his bike crashed through a fence, narrowly missing a 60ft drop.
Farmer Gordon Walsh said he had returned to his home near Newgate Bank on Sunday to find the fence had been smashed through and pieces of bike debris left nearby.
“This is the third time this year a bike has crashed in the area,” he said. “The first hit a tree and took the bark off and the second wiped out the daffodils. Now this one has taken the fence out, just missing a 60ft drop.
“He must have been in a group of bikers who managed to lift the bike onto the road so he could carry on.”
Mr Walsh said he also ran a holiday cottage at the farm and it was fortunate no one was trying to leave the property at the time.
“If a vehicle had been waiting to turn out, the motorbike would have gone straight through the side of it,” he said.
“Normally there would also have been more than 90 sheep in the field. Had they been there they would have got out on the road and there could have been a fatal accident.”
Mr Walsh said the majority of bikers used the roads sensibly with groups coming from as far away as Holland and Germany to enjoy a day out in the area.
“Unfortunately there is the group of ‘boy racers’ who watch the racing on the television and think they have the same gear as the professionals,” he said.
“When those guys come off their bikes they get up and walk away. The ones round here are picked up in an air ambulance.”
