Sight Support Ryedale gets a £54,000 boost
A CHARITY which supports sight impaired people has been given a funding boost to encourage new members and expand its services.
Sight Support Ryedale is to receive £54,000 during the next two years in the latest round of Big Lottery grants.
Janice Every, chief officer of the charity, said: “We are delighted to be successful in gaining funding from the Big Lottery again.
“They have helped us for the past three years, and have decided to grant us another two years as they recognise that our services are really making a difference.”
Sight Support runs social groups in Malton and Pickering, a walking group, yoga sessions, a book group, computer support, and regular excursions, all specially tailored for people who are partially sighted or blind.
They also provide door-to-door transport for all of the activities, and run a resource centre from their premises in Yorkersgate, Malton.
Janice said that the two additional years of funding would enable the charity to feel more secure, and enable a telephone befriending scheme to be set up.
“Sight Support Ryedale is a small local charity, but together with our volunteers we achieve a great deal, and it’s good to have this recognition and backing for the work that we do alongside people who are struggling to cope with the everyday challenges of losing their sight,” she added.
Sight Support is in touch with more than 90 members in the area, with about 50 who are able to regularly join in with the activities.
Maureen Durkan, one of the members, said: “As a relative newcomer to Malton, I’ve so enjoyed the spirit of friendship offered by Sight Support.
“Janice and her assistant, Vicky, really go the extra mile in their willingness to help, and I really want to thank them.”
