Grouse shooting season gets under way
10:24am Tuesday 13th August 2013 in News
Guns take aim across Yorkshire skies as beaters drive up the birds on the Glorious 12th, the traditional start of the grouse shooting season.
Moorland managers yesterday said a good grouse season is on the cards after bad weather blighted the last two years.
Cold, wet conditions which were widespread last year in the washout summer meant grouse chicks became chilled and died. This was coupled with the insects they rely on for food in their early days being in short supply as well.
Moorland Association chairman Robert Benson said pre-season counts of grouse in England had been delayed by the heatwave, but, he said: “Generally, at long last, for the first time in the last few years, we’ve had a reasonable nesting and hatching period, with good chick survival.”
