Ryedale District Council reacts to second fuel theft this month
FUEL thieves have targeted Ryedale District Council (RDC) for the second time this month.
Around 800 litres of diesel - worth more than £1000 - were taken from trucks parked at the council’s recycling depot on Showfield Lane, Malton, overnight between Sunday, August 11 and Monday, August 12.
At the beginning of the month, 600 litres or around £900 worth of diesel were taken from the same place overnight between Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3.
RDC's Head of Environment Phil Long said the site is surrounded by security fencing and has CCTV, and had changed procedures after the thefts.
He said: “The fuel that has been stolen has been taken overnight from our vehicles which have been parked at the site.
“In the light of the thefts we have revised our operational procedures and fuel is now no longer held overnight in vehicles. All vehicles are now being fuelled up in the morning and residents should be aware that this may slightly alter collection times.”
“We are working closely with North Yorkshire Police to ensure that those responsible for this theft are caught and are confident that the security arrangements we have in place have provided information which will help to lead to arrests”
Police have appealed for the public to help them trace the thieves. Anyone in the area around Showfield Lane who saw any suspicious vehicles or activity late in the evening of Sunday, August 11 is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Andrew Pomfret, or email email@example.com.
Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
