Charity award for Ryedale volunteer
A DEDICATED Ryedale volunteer has been honoured by the charity he fundraises for after years of hard work in the district.
Peter Danby Smith, from Scagglethorpe, has been awarded Macmillian Cancer Support’s Richard Hambro Award, given to volunteers who lead and manage groups to an exceptional standard, or inspire others to outstanding success.
The area’s fundraising manager Sally Millington nominated Peter, who she said saved the group from an uncertain future when he took on the job of coordinating volunteers in Ryedale three years ago.
Sally said: “Peter has been an invaluable volunteer for several years, but really increased his support over the past three years when the chair of the Ryedale committee resigned.
“He has gone from covering two hours at one supermarket, to being the main contact for all the volunteers at all the collections across Ryedale. He meets, co-ordinates and thanks the volunteers, always with an enthusiastic smile.
“Without Peter, the collections would not raise the amounts that they do, Macmillan would not have a presence across the rural area of Ryedale and the other volunteers in the area would have much less support.
The award was approved by the charity’s board of trustees who agreed Peter was a worthy recipient, Sally added.
“I am so pleased that he received the award as he does so much for us,” she said.
“I don’t deserve such an award but I am honoured to accept it on behalf of all those generous contributors who have continuously made my bucket heavier over the years. Collecting is great fun and there is a huge public generosity out there awaiting the harvester.”
The Ryedale group desperately needs more volunteers, Peter added, and he would encourage anybody to get involved by contacting him on 01944 758448, or Sally on 07801 307058 email email@example.com.
