Country life showcased at Thornton-le-Dale Show
A SHOWCASE of traditional village life pulled in the crowds as thousands of people enjoyed Thornton-le-Dale Show.
Organisers estimated about 15,000 visitors attended yesterday’s event on The Showground in the village which is now in its 94th year.
Presided over by David and Diana FitzGerald, the show started at 9am and continued into the evening, featuring livestock and produce classes, family entertainment, live music and sports events.
On display were examples of local craft skills, from wood-turning and furniture-making to pottery, silk printing, painting and dyeing, embroidery, jewellery, candlemaking and stained glass.
Long-standing chairman Martin Blythe said the event took place thanks to the efforts of a core group of organisers along with a show committee of 45 people and an army of helpers on the day.
“On show day we get a lot of extra volunteers manning gates, stewarding and looking after judges and it is brilliant. You couldn’t do it without them,” he said.
“We can’t plan for the weather but it is brilliant here. Last year it rained heavily in the run-up to the show. This is the 94th show and it is still going strong.
“It is well supported, very popular and very friendly.”
He said in previous years any money made at the event had been spent on improving facilities or supporting local causes.
