YOUNG filmmakers have been demonstrating their skills in animation.

Pupils at St Benedict’s, Ampleforth, St Mary’s, Malton and St Joseph’s, Pickering, took part in the annual joint project.

This year’s theme was animation and each school took part in a workshop with technology consultant Andrew Tidswell before working on their own films.

Lisa Brown, headteacher at St Joseph’s, said pupils from Years 3-6 had worked in small groups to create their animation.

“Over the last three years the schools have come together to work on a themed project,” she said.

“This year the focus was writing and the children really engaged with the task, especially the boys.”

Mrs Brown said the children had put together a variety of storylines on a story board which were then turned into animation.

“It took a lot of patience and was very technical but they really enjoyed it,” she said.

Gemma Lee, literacy teacher at St Mary’s, said the project had really benefited the children’s writing abilities.

“They had to really think about the story and how they would transform it to animation,” she said.

“It also allowed the children to be creative in different ways and is something that we will certainly work on again.”

Kevin Macklam, headteacher at St Benedict’s, said the pupils from all three schools had showcased their work at Pickering Memorial Hall.

“They used everything from Lego to clay in their animations and there was some fantastic work,” he said.

“I’m sure we have a future filmmakers on our hands.”
