A WELL-known community stalwart in Thirsk , who was last year made an MBE, has now been honoured for his 60 years’ dedication to Rotary International for England and Ireland.

Harry Woodhead, who turns 95 next month, said the last 60 years had “crept up” on him.

A presentation evening was recently held when he was presented with a 60- year membership award and a letter of thanks from the world Rotary president.

Mr Woodhead, who served as a captain in Burma in the Second World War, has given a lifetime of service to Thirsk. He said: “I became involved in Thirsk Rotary after the war and over the years we did a lot for the town – including building two Abbeyfield homes.”

He played a key role in the development of the care homes and Thirsk Auction Mart.

Mr Woodhead still attends some Rotary meetings and has honorary membership.
