A RETIRED civil servant from has received the Imperial Service Medal for more than 36 years’ distinguished service to the armed forces.

The award was presented to Joan McBurney, of West Lilling, by Colonel Edward York, vice Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, at a private ceremony held at Worsley Barracks in York.

It recognises her commitment to the Ministry of Defence and Territorial Army, having consistently carried out tasks above and beyond her areas of responsibility.

She worked initially at Cavalry Barracks before transferring to the HQ Eastern District, then the Infantry Training Battalion at Strensall and finally to Worsley Barracks.

“I am so proud to have received this award,” she said.

“Starting out in working life so many years ago, it’s impossible to know where you might end up, but I’ve been very lucky to have had a career which I’ve very much enjoyed, supporting many soldiers throughout their service and meeting some wonderful people.

“It’s a great honour to have my long service recognised in this way.”
