Pickering traders in talks

TRADERS turned out in force to a meeting called by Pickering in Business to discuss ways of boosting the town’s economy.

Organiser Coun William Oxley said: “There was huge groundswell by the businesses that we need to come together to promote Pickering as a tourist centre and an ideal shopping area.”

It is planned to build up a directory of all businesses in the town, together with Pickering’s attractions and services and businesses will be able to feature their own enterprises, said Coun Oxley.

Business leaders are to explore ideas for new events and promotions to attract more people to the market town. “There was certainly a lot of enthusiasm to take Pickering forward, it was a very positive meeting,” he said.

Another meeting is planned in the next few weeks, he added.

People find the supermarket too small/expensive and there's no cheap fuel, so they go elsewhere, like Thirsk, Northallerton or Scarborough. Also Morrisons at Malton but that has no fuel and is choca. There is also very limited parking. There seems to be plenty of tourists in the summer though and the railway is a big draw. The traffic congestion then puts the locals off a bit.

Mayor Oxley, your directory idea is genius, might I suggest a title for your amazing NEW idea: "Yellow Pages".

Moorsider, we don't need any more Supermarkets in the UK. One of the great delights of living in Pickering is we still have a wonderful selection of great retailers selling higher quality produce than you can find on any supermaket shelf.
