Owner applies to turn Malton pub into flats

PLANS have been submitted to convert a Malton pub into flats.

The application, for The Jockey in Wheelgate, includes change of use and alteration of the ground floor into two one-bedroom flats.

Richard Murray-Wells, director of Homfray Hotels Ltd, which owns the pub, said they were looking at a number of options.

“Trading in Malton is very tough at the moment and the pub is going OK but not great,” he said.

“As a result, we are considering what the best way forward is, whether we carry on as a pub or, depending on the outcome of the planning application, convert it into flats.”

Couldn' t agree more gazzar. One by one we' re losing the traditional pubs and clubs.

There are many reasons of course but I reckon the biggest culprits are the breweries and pubco' s. It' s hard to think of another industry which continues to demonstrate such blatant greed in the face of a rapidly shrinking market. (OK, maybe Banks)

One would almost think that the breweries would rather that we all bought beer from the shop and drank at home. Perhaps they would! No need to bother with all those dirty barrels, distribution costs and cellar maintenance expenditure. Just bung it in a tin, shove it on a pallet and send it to the shop. Bigger profits all round!
