A TASTE of the Deep South comes to Malton this weekend as the second Yorkshire Cajun and Zydeco Festival prepares to get the town swinging.
This year’s festival, based at the Milton Rooms, will again feature eight top UK and European Cajun and Zydeco bands, including Allez Mama from Holland and Zarico Playboys from France.
Bands from the UK include Out Of The Swamp, Colin & The Crawfish, Elvis Fontenot And The Sugar Bees and Acadian Driftwood – making it the biggest festival in the UK specialising in Cajun music.
Glyn Roberts, one of the organisers, said ticket sales were going well and they were looking forward to a busy weekend.
“We have listened to the feedback from last year and invited back three of the bands which made such an impression with festival-goers in 2012,” he said.
“New to this year will be a great exhibition featuring some brilliant photos and fascinating information on the Cajun/Creole culture.”
Another new feature of this year’s festival will be instrument workshops with Paul Judge, leading the accordion workshop on Saturday and Sunday at the Blue Ball in Newbiggin at 11am and Nick Thompson, with the fiddle workshop, at Suddaby’s Hotel, from 11.30am.
Those taking part will receive tuition from the professionals if they bring along their own instruments.
Finally, there are dance workshops at the Mount Hotel and a Cajun Kitchen where festival goers can sample Cajun-style food and drink.
Glyn said they were on track to welcome as many visitors as last year, with fans travelling from all over the country and Europe.
“We have a great venue in the Milton Rooms which is perfect for music and dancing,” he said.
“It proved absolutely perfect for the music and the dancing. And with dance being such an important part of the whole weekend, the dance floor got a big thumbs up from everyone.
“We were thrilled at the response of everyone last year and our aim is to add something extra each time to make the festival bigger and better each year.”
