RUNNERS of all abilities are being invited to take part in the fourth annual Helmsley 10k at Easter.

Starting from the town’s sports and social club, on Sunday, March 31, at 10am, the run covers a varied terrain, including roads, forestry tracks and fields.

The first 300 to cross the finish line will receive an Easter egg and mug. In addition, there will be a children’s race for five to 14-year-olds, starting at 11am on the sportsfield.

Funds raised will go towards the project to revamp Helmsley Sports and Social Club.

The aim is to enhance the use of the facilities for the whole community and improve car parking and the children’s play area, as well as overhaul the existing pavilion to include new toilets, kitchen and bar.

Carol Swift, one of the 10k organisers, said they would also be holding a tombola and serving home-made cakes, tea and coffee.

“Last year, we raised about £2,000 and hope to match that or hopefully raise even more this time,” she said.

Carol said this year they were delighted that the event was being sponsored by Middlesbrough Football Club.

“All proceeds from the race and associated fundraising events will go to the Helmsley Recreation Charity fund that is co-ordinating fundraising for the regeneration of the sports facilities in Baxton’s Lane,” she said.

“Work is well in progress on this so all the hard work is paying off.”

Carol said they would welcome anyone who would like to volunteer to help with the event.

“We are always looking for people to get involved and help on the day, particularly marshalling the run,” she added.
