£50k bricks deal for Easingwold firm

A NORTH Yorkshire firm has provided the building blocks for a new development in Oxford – literally.
York Handmade Brick Company, based at Alne near Easingwold, secured a £50,000 contract for the Saïd Business School, the business school of Oxford University. The company supplied 30,000 bricks for the second phase of the development.
David Armitage, chairman of York Handmade, said: “We were delighted to be able to help in the construction of such an important Oxford building. The buff-coloured Byland Blend bricks were especially created to match the bricks of the first phase of the business school development.”
He said the bricks, from the now defunct Williamson Cliff brickworks near Stamford, were very similar to those of many historic Oxford and Cambridge colleges.
Michael Trigg, associate director of the London-based architects Dixon Jones, who designed the school, said: “York Handmade came to me highly recommended and they did not disappoint.”
