Calls to protect rural beauty in Yorkshire Wolds

A COUNTRYSIDE watchdog is calling on the Government to strengthen protection for the most beautiful parts of Britain, including the Yorkshire Wolds.

In an eight-point manifesto, the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has asked Ministers to consider creating new areas of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) to preserve landscapes from the threat of development.

One of the areas it wants to see protected is the Wolds, while it also says the Yorkshire Dales National Park should be extended towards the Lake District.

The CPRE said any significant development in a national park or AONB should be subjected to the highest level of scrutiny, asking whether it was in the national interest, whether there were alternatives and its impact on the local economy and environment.

“It’s time for the Government to up its game and stand up for the countryside,” said CBRE’s rural policy campaigner, Emma Marrington.
