Members agree to freeze council tax

A BID to increase the council tax paid by Ryedale households was heavily defeated at last week’s distrrict council meeting.

Coun John Clark (Lib) urged the council to reject a Government grant paid to councils which freeze the council tax rate and instead to impose a £1.99 rise.

But Coun Keith Knaggs (Con) said the Liberal members of Ryedale District Council were asking council tax payers to pay more, which would result in money going back to the Treasury in Whitehall.

The council voted to freeze its part of the district’s council tax bill and Coun Linda Cowling, council leader, said: “We are in a strong financial position thanks to prudent planning and fundamental changes to how staff deliver services.”
