The Saltersgate Inn
A FAMOUS Yorkshire pub that shut down six years ago is continuing attract interest but remains unsold, the owner says.
The Saltersgate Inn on the road between Pickering and Whitby closed in 2007. It was bought by local builder Joseph Woodhead the next year but his redevelopment plans were scuppered by the econonic crash and he placed it back on the market last year.
He and the estate agent KnightFrank both said there had been lots of enquiries about the building but no deal had yet been agreed.
The pub dates back to 1648 and was famous for many years for its fire, said to never be allowed to go out.
Local legend says two excisemen were killed and buried below the fireplace in the days when the pub was a base for salt smugglers.
