Wentworth Wheels gets in gear to promote road safety

AN event aimed at promoting safety on the roads is being held on Saturday.

Hosted by Safer Ryedale, Wentworth Wheels will be attended by North Yorkshire County Council road safety officers, firefighters, local police and the ambulance service who will provide safety tips and leaflets.

Those attending will have the opportunity to test their driving skills and watch practical demonstrations, including simulated road collisions and reaction tester.

Gail Cook, of Safer Ryedale, said: “We are committed to making Ryedale a safer place to live, work and visit, and I would encourage people to visit us on the day, when there will be an opportunity to question those present, take advice on riding safely and speak with like-minded people.”

Road safety has been identified as one of the top four priorities for the partnership and data shows that Ryedale has the fourth worst record of fatal road traffic collisions in the Yorkshire region.

Mark Naylor, of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and chairman of the Scarborough Ryedale and Whitby Road Safety Steering Group, said: “Bringing together all the services that are present at a road traffic collision and with the wealth of knowledge the road safety officers contribute, is by far the best opportunity to discuss road safety advice.

“You will also be able to witness and experience first-class demonstrations throughout the day.

“The day is geared around the younger driver; however it is not exclusive, so please speak to your friends and families and get yourselves along for a meaningful interactive day with people who want to reduce traffic collisions, as a result reducing fatalities and life-changing injuries.

“It may be your idea that could make the difference between saving someone’s life.”

The event will be held at Wentworth Street car park, Malton, on Saturday, 11.30am-4.30pm, and will include a free prize draw for a £20 Betta Motoring Voucher and a quiz with prizes.
