Byland Abbey painting to go on show Byland Abbey painting to go on show

THIS painting of Byland Abbey, near Ampleforth, is to go on public display for the first time in 70 years.

John Piper’s depiction of the abbey was painted in 1940 as part of the wartime Recording Britain project.

It has not been exhibited in public since the early 1940s but will now feature in an exhibition of Piper’s works at The Portland Gallery in London, from March 7 to March 28.

Piper, who died in 1992, was an official war artist from 1940 to 1942, and his painting of the destruction caused to Coventry Cathedral after it was bombed by the Luftwaffe in the blitz has been described as “Britain’s Guernica.”
