Ryedale arts sector enjoys boom

BUSINESSES in the arts, creative and culture sector are playing a key role in Ryedale’s economy and there are plans to build on that success.

Jos Holmes, Ryedale District Council’s economy and community manager, said: “Ryedale has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the creative sector. Such businesses account for about one in 20 of all businesses in Ryedale.”

They include four museums, 11 professional arts organisations, more than 150 micro-enterprises, 100 social enterprises.

Cultural organisations attract more than 400,000 visitors a year and investment is more than £1 million, she said.

She told members of the council’s Commissioning Board: “The aim is to have a greater link between the creative and visitor economy and to improve the economic benefit of arts and heritage as well as supporting creative individuals and enterprises to foster building growth.”

About 300 people work in the arts field across the district and the creative industries as a whole support a further 1,500 jobs, Ms Holmes told members.
