People in North Yorkshire are being reminded to belt up as today marks the 30th anniversary of the seatbelt law coming into force in England and Wales.

The legislation which makes it a legal requirement for all car passengers to wear a seatbelt was introduced in 1983 and has seen road deaths fall dramatically.

But figures released by the Department of Transport today show 220 deaths and serious injuries a year are caused by people not wearing a seatbelt nationally.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police, said: “There is no doubt that wearing a seatbelt saves lives and serious injury.”
