30th anniversary of seatbelt law coming into force
6:50am Thursday 31st January 2013 in News
People in North Yorkshire are being reminded to belt up as today marks the 30th anniversary of the seatbelt law coming into force in England and Wales.
The legislation which makes it a legal requirement for all car passengers to wear a seatbelt was introduced in 1983 and has seen road deaths fall dramatically.
But figures released by the Department of Transport today show 220 deaths and serious injuries a year are caused by people not wearing a seatbelt nationally.
A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police, said: “There is no doubt that wearing a seatbelt saves lives and serious injury.”

Just like the know-it-alls of today I remember when this came in and all manner of people went around testifying that it was a bad idea because they knew someone who had a crash and survived because they were thrown clear or because they weren't trapped in by their seat belt.
Isn't hindsight great?
Oh yeah and who was it who fronted the campaign to remind people to "clunk-click, every trip!"?
Now then now then, boys and girls!

Driving a car with radial tyres, drum brakes, no heater and no seat belts down to the pub to drink 6 pints while polluting the atmosphere with smoke then driving home again would have been accepted in the past. I'm sure there are some who will fortunately not be around for too many more years who would yearn for a return to such times.
Driving in towns at 30mph while burning fossil fuels will be looked back upon as equally dated in the future.
