Ryedale jobless total shows upward trend

UNEMPLOYMENT in Ryedale increased in December to the highest level since last March.

The number of people out of work and claiming benefit rose from 641 people in November to 695 in December. This is also up on a year ago, when 672 claimants were recorded.

In York, the figure for the same period fell to the lowest level since December 2008.

According to official Government statistics, 2,850 people in York were claiming JobSeekers Allowance (JSA), 2.1 per cent of working age population in December. This is down from 2,968 in November and 3,355 in December 2011.

More people signed on in North Yorkshire as a whole, with 8,785 claimants, 2.4 per cent of the working age population, up from 8,516 in November, although this was below December 2011’s figure of 9,845.

East Yorkshire’s claimant count also increased from 6,702 in November to 6,830 in December, although it was down from December 2011’s figure of 7,166.

Nationally, 3.7 per cent of the working-age population respectively claimed JSA.
